    An Overview of Night Vision Devices

    Over the years it has come to our attention that there are many misconceptions and much misinformation regarding the use of night vision equipment. Some of it comes from watching the outrageous things that actors do with ‘supposed’ night vision in movies and some of it comes from listening to fellow hunters who really are not in the know when it comes to night vision.

    That prompted us to write this article on the different night vision gear and devices that are out there in the civil use. This article will give you a general overview of how night vision really works and talk about some of the most popular night vision gear and devices too.

    Here is some general information on night vision technology that may prove useful to you when you are shopping for a new piece of night vision gear or a night vision device.

    Type of night vision technology

    Image intensifier is a vacuum tube device for increasing the intensity of available light in an optical system to allow use under low-light conditions, such as at night, to facilitate visual imaging of low-light processes, such as fluorescence of materials in X-rays or gamma rays, or for conversion of non-visible light sources, such as near-infrared or short wave infrared to visible. They operate by converting photons of light into electrons, amplifying the electrons (usually with a microchannel plate) and then converting the amplified electrons back into photons for viewing.


    Thermal imaging---Effectively translate heat - that is, thermal energy - into visible light to analyze surroundings. This makes them very versatile. Living things and mechanical equipment put out heat, making them visible to thermal devices even in the dark. It can be very precise, requiring only a small amount of heat to work effectively.


    Active illumination-- The active illumination night vision method is used commonly in most of the commercial, governmental, and residential security purposes for providing the effective night lighting of clear imaging vision under the low lighting conditions. To obtain a reliable low lighting video security system, the active illumination is integrated.


    CMOS technology---Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor, abbreviated as 'CMOS', is a technology for constructing integrated circuits. CMOS technology is used in microprocessors, microcontrollers, static RAM, and other digital logic circuits. ... CMOS also allows a high density of logic functions on a chip. Night vision with CMOS technology will be more clearer and sensitive image than other technology and never worry about burnt out when exposed in strong light.
